South Sydney have agreed to Glenn Stewart's request to be released at the end of the NRL season, with the forward set to extend his career overseas.

The back-rower had been contracted to the Rabbitohs for the 2016 season but has the opportunity to take up an extended contract in the Super League.

South Sydney coach Michael Maguire thanked Stewart for his service this year.

"Glenn came to us with an opportunity recently for him to lengthen his career for both him and his family overseas and we have granted him the release as of the end of this season.

"Glenn has done a fantastic job for us so far this year and his commitments to this club are not yet over.

"We look forward to continuing our journey this year with Glenn as part of the team, and we will then wish him luck with his future endeavours once this season has come to a close," Maguire said.

Stewart said he would give his all to the Rabbitohs during the finals series, starting with Sunday afternoon's sudden-death showdown with Cronulla at Allianz Stadium.

"I'm grateful to the club for allowing me to take this opportunity next year, but that's next year, and we still have things we want to achieve this year," Stewart said.

"I'll be doing everything I can to help this team achieve those goals.

"I want to thank all of the players, coaches, staff and the members for making me feel so welcome this year and I'll be putting in everything on the field to pay that back to the club before the season is over," Stewart said.
